Gary Robbins, OC Register's "Science Dude," announces that historian and social critic Mike Davis will deliver a lecture on Halloween at UC Irvine. The title of his lecture is "Katrina in the Suburbs? The Politics of Fire in Southern California." He is scheduled to speak at noon in Room 3008 in UCI's Calit2 Building, next to Bren Hall on Ring Road. The lecture is free and open to the public. Parking is probably available for a not-so-nominal fee.
In an email, Davis told Robbins: "I will discuss the relevant political background (lack of county fire department, failure of rural lands initiative, underfunding of fire departments, etc.) that might help us answer the questions: why are these men smiling (the governor, mayor of San Diego, etc)? Shouldn't they be wearing sackcloth or seeking exile in Paraguay instead of turning this tragedy into a celebration of conservative values (the 'anti-Katrina' in Geraldo Rivera's immortal words)?"
Davis, a MacArthur "genius" fellowship recipient, is the author of many books including "Ecology of Fear" and "City of Quartz."
