In response to the current world economic crisis, New Madrid will dedicate the Winter 2010 issue to the dynamics of poverty and wealth.
Submissions that address cultures of poverty and wealth, psychologies of poverty and wealth, theories of poverty and wealth, concepts of relative poverty and relative wealth, cycles of poverty and wealth, etc. Work that takes up such issues as life expectancy, literacy, food security, income disparity, wealth distribution and voluntary poverty. Writing that examines the relationship between poverty and wealth from the vantage points of a number of literary genres and a number of philosophical, religious, social and economic perspectives.
Deadline: November 1, 2009
New Madrid is the official journal of the low-residency Master of Fine Arts program at Murray State University. Their website explains:
"[The journal] takes its name from the New Madrid seismic zone, which falls within the central Mississippi Valley and extends through western Kentucky. Between 1811 and 1812, four earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 7.0 struck this region, changing the course of the Mississippi River, creating Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee and ringing church bells as far away as Boston."
Their Summer 2009 issue features the work of Sherman Alexie, A. Igoni Barrett, Stephanie Dickinson, Simon Perchik, and many more established and emerging writers

New Madrid published a chapter from my upcoming novel in its special Mexico in the Heartland issue (which you have pictured here). It's a fine publication that is willing to address important social issues through literature. I strongly urge writers to submit. Thanks again for letting folks know about such opportunities.
