I love the magazine cover. I saw the same photo printed as a postcard shortly before it appeared on the issue of Poets & Writers.
It's hard to see in the image as it shows in the blog here, though (and you maybe already spotted this) if you click on it, to get a larger size of the cover image, the book Marilyn Monroe is reading is James Joyce's Ulysses.
According to something written by the photographer, Eve Arnold, about the photo, Monroe at that time in her life was reading Ulysses, especially the final section of the book, because it helped her with freely associating during sessions with her psychiatrist.
