Next Week: Big Orange Book Festival



Next weekend, the second annual Big Orange Book Festival convenes at Chapman University in nearby old town Orange. Three days of books, writers, poets and the people who love them (you). 

And it's all free. 

Friday and Saturday evenings feature free film screenings in Memorial Hall: Friday's film is The Princess Bride and Saturday night features a discussion with Marvel editor Bill Rosemann followed by a screening of Marvel’s Avengers.  Both begin at 6 PM.

Some highlights from the Saturday panels:

10 AM: Gold Coast Novelists
Location: Beckman Hall 404
This panel will include authors Ramona Ausubel, Candi Sary, Alan Rifkin and Beatriz Williams with moderator Lugene Rosen.

11 AM: A Conversation with Alan Cheuse and Michael Silverblatt
Location: Argyros Forum 201
Alan Cheuse, an award winning novelist and frequent contributor to NPR’s All Things Considered, and Michael Silverblatt, host of KCRW’sBookworm, will be speaking with author and professor Tom Zoellner.

12:30 PM:  I Spy, Sci-Fi
Location: Argyros Forum 209
This panel will feature science fiction authors Raymond E. Feist, Michael Cassutt, Tim Powers and Austin Grossman with moderator James P. Blaylock.

2:00 PM: The New Writer: An Author’s Responsibility in the 21st Century
Location: Memorial Hall
Explore the author’s role in the book business with publisher Kevin Staniec, founder of the publishing collective Black Hill Press, and authors Veronica Bane, Ryan Gattis and Lilliam Rivera. 

3:45 PM:  Golden State Poets
Location: Beckman Hall 404
This reading will explore a variety of poetic styles with Victoria Chang, David Matlin, Jerome Rothenberg and moderator Anna Leahy.

Some highlights from the Sunday panels:

10 AM: Semi-Memoir Panel: Fact vs. Fiction
Location: Fish Interfaith Center
Discover the intricacies of turning fact into compelling fiction with authors Lan Cao, David McCabe, and Luis J. Rodriguez, with moderator Melinda J. Combs.

11:00 AM: Middle Grade Wordsmiths
Location: Argyros Ballroom
This panel will include award-winning authors Doug Cooney, Gordon McAlpine and Amy Goldman Koss, with moderator Carol Mooney.

Other panel cover topics such as publishing, children's lit, crime fiction, nonfiction and memoir, mystery, fantasy, romance, cook books, screenwriting and much more. When not listening to panels, attendees can browse the book festival exhibition booths and Authors' Pavilion.

Thank you, Lisa! These are some that also caught my eye. And many thanks to Andrew who words have pushed me to try to no matter what get the the C.K. Williams reading on the 15th.

I hope our paths cross at one or more of these. Miss you two!
