- Rebel Girl
- Rebel Girl takes her nom-de-plume from Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, labor activist and subject of the Woody Guthrie song, "Rebel Girl." In real life, she is Lisa Alvarez, a mild-mannered professor of English at Irvine Valley College and co-director of the summer writers workshops at the Community of Writers. Her stories and essays have appeared most recently in the "American Book Review," Green Mountains Review," "Santa Monica Review" and in the anthology "Sudden Fiction Latino: Short-Short Stories from the United States and Latin America" (Norton). It's a bit pricey - that's why I've never gone.
Bradbury inspires, from my first reading of Dandelion Wine at age 10, when I snuck into the adult stacks at the Corona del Mar public library, to a recent rereading of "The Toynbee Convector." How could anyone have passed up free tickets last night? The author was as entertaining as his work - may he live forever!
BTW, Literary Orange tickets are much less this year, and all-day volunteers get in free (except for parking)!
